15 interesting things to perform in BORACAY, Philippines

If I ever doubted the popularity of Boracay (which I didn’t), it swiftly evaporated as soon as I walked along White Beach. It was midweek of an off-peak season, yet this side of the island was packed to the edge. never mind the temperamental weather. never mind the gloomy, un-postcard-friendly skies. Beach-goers swarmed around the shore like worker bees drawn in to some kind of tropical pheromones. The culprit, Queen B.

Boracay is on a roll. It has been for decades now. In 2010 alone, Boracay registered nearly 780,000 vacationer arrivals. That’s three years ago! A great deal has occurred since. Airlines have added lots of new flights in as well as out of Kalibo worldwide Airport, the nearest major gateway other than Caticlan. outside the country, a number of worldwide travel authorities have hailed Boracay as one of the very best beaches in the world. Undoubtedly, Boracay stays one of the most prominent beach destinations in the country.

Boracay has been criticized for overcrowdedness as well as hypercommercialism. lots of other beach destinations have been found as well as made a lot more accessible, each catering to their own niche: Malapascua for chasing sharks, Coron for seeking wrecks, Calaguas for camping retreats, CamSur for extreme sports. however Boracay… Boracay has something for everyone.

LJUBLJANA: 25 best things to Do & places to check out

We got stranded in Ljubljana.

We were supposed to fly out of Slovenia, but the airline we booked filed for bankruptcy and cancelled all their flights — including ours. It definitely threw a wrench into our plans because we were backpacking around Europe with a limited budget. While we were trying to figure out our next steps, we decided to extend our stay in Ljubljana. It [turned out to be] a blessing in disguise.

Prior to this, we had seen only a little bit of Ljubljana because it was raining a lot during most of our stay and we focused more on the Slovenian countryside. but staying longer meant we had more time to explore the city and enjoy more of what it has to offer!

Yes, we got stranded in Ljubljana. but it [turned out to be] a good thing!

Here are 25 of the best things to do and places to check out in Ljubljana. We also added a sample Ljubljana itinerary in the end.

Sunrise at Culion Church and Fortress, Palawan

I was able to beat my alarm clock. At five in the morning, I woke up from a short and shallow slumber, opened my eyes, got up and out of the bed, and then the alarm clock went off. It was one of those rare mornings that I was able to score against it. That’s how excited I was to start the day. I grabbed my camera and made my way to the church to watch the sunrise that Culion is starting to be known for.

Culion Church used to be a fortress. The first Agustinian missionaries arrived in the island in 1622 to establish a parish but the repeated moro raids pushed them to build a fortress as defense in 1740. almost two centuries later, Culion was declared a leper colony and became home to Filipinos afflicted with the illness. In 1933, the Jesuits reconstructed the fort and transformed it into a place of worship, now known as La Inmaculada Concepcion Church.

What was left of the fort (aside from the parts converted into the church) is now a crumbling watchtower, crowning what used to be a bastion. This also serves as a lighthouse, guiding seafarers at night. The fort is perched on a promontory, facing the sea and allowing an unobstructed view of the east.

The pre-sunrise glow was already illuminating the dark sapphire skies but the rays have yet to make an appearance. From here, I was able to see the side walls and pillars of the structure. The 25m x 10m church was hewn from live corals but concrete was added in some parts. It is topped with crimson rounded roof supported by another pair of red-painted walls, accented with white arch windows.

Culion Church perched on a cliff
The crimson roofs of Culion Church and the naked belfry
Waiting for the sunrise

From the main road, a concrete staircase leads visitors to the two-tiered facade. The top layer boasts two arch windows with a niche that shelters an image of the Virgin Mary. below it are three doorways with niches in between, housing images of saints. Its main door is flanked by bougainvillea trees that added a dash of hot pink to the structure, cold and grey. To its right is a wall-less belfry and to its left a beautiful Palawan cherry blossoms tree.

I thought I still had much time, so I went back to the room to wake up my friend Mica and drag her to Fort Culion. just when I entered the room, it happened. The sun emerged from a lump of clouds and painted the skies pink and golden. thank heavens our room, like the fortress, was facing east that I still had a great view of the morning’s first celestial showcase.

How to get to Culion Church and Fort: Day tours around Culion are available in Coron for around P1100 per pax. If you’re a big group, you may charter a boat to Culion at Lualhati Park for P3000 for 4pax or P3500 for 8pax. If you want it do-it-yourself style, you may ride the 1pm boat to Culion from Coron port for P180. Return boat is scheduled the next morning, which means you will need to stay overnight in the island as we did.

10 Food Delights to try in Japan

The moment that sushi graced my palate, I understood I had been mistaken all this time.

I was understood in my circle as the man who hated Japanese food. Well, ‘hated’ would be rather a stretch. I was just not a fan. At lunch or dinnertime as well as a buddy would suggest a Japanese restaurant, I’d be the very first to run to the opposite direction (unless they’re treating me). I’d always discovered sushi weird-tasting as well as numerous other dishes as well dry. If there was one thing I wasn’t looking ahead to in my very first trip to Japan, it was the food.

But that altered as soon as I had my very first meal in Osaka.

Apparently, Japanese food in Japan is lightyears much better than those I had tried in the Philippines. Duh?

My very first authentic Japanese meal came in the type of a sushi set from Endo Sushi, a humble yet legendary gastronomic oasis in Osaka’s wholesale fish market area. They have been operating for over a century, perfecting the art that is sushi. The freshest components as well as the delicate way it was prepared created the very best meal that had ever gone with my lips. I might state that most likely the most unforgettable — as well as enlightening — lunch I had. One bite as well as I died in an instant, only to be resurrected with a whole new appreciation for the Japanese cuisine.

Here are a few of the dishes, snacks, desserts, as well as drinks that I tried.

Sushi

Sushi Overload: Ebi (shrimp), Tamago (sweet omelet), Awabi (abalone), Tekka (tuna roll), as well as Tako (octopus)

Okonomiyaki as well as Negiyaki

Okonomiyaki. Osaka’s well-known conventional pancake made from wheat flour, cabbage, as well as eggs (JPY 819)
Negiyaki. Kyoto’s version of Okonomiyaki. made from wheat flour, eggs as well as kujo onions. (JPY 735)

Fugu

Fugu. commonly thought about the second many poisonous vertebrate in the world (next only to the golden Poison Frog), the PUFFERFISH brings tetrodotoxin, a compound that is 1200 times much more potent than cyanide, mainly in the fish’s ovaries as well as liver. One pufferfish can kill 30 adult humans. There is no understood antidote. In Japan, it is popularly served as sashimi as well as sushi topping. The toxic parts have been eliminated of course.

Yakitori

Yakitori. however this is not chicken. In this part of Kyoto, yakitori is typically quail or pigeon.

Ramen

Miso ramen with Gyouza as well as poultry Karaage
Kyushu Shoyu Ramen, tastes like lucky Me Pancit Canton, except better. sokkal jobb.

Takoyaki

Takoyaki. Wheat as well as cabbage spheres with octopus core.

Japanese Dango

Mitarashi Dango. Barbequed rice on stick. wonderful as well as extremely filling!

Kakigori

Kakigori. Regarded as the ancestor of the Philippines’ halo-halo. It is stated that the origins of the halo-halo can be traced back to prewar Japanese who introduced us the concept of “beans in syrup.” this is matcha (green tea) flavor.

Sake

Sake (JPY525) vs Chu-hi (JPY399)

Taiyaki

Taiyaki. Fish-shaped cakes.
The toppings of my Taiyaki
ISTENI FINOM! The taiyaki, not the vendor.

Bonus

Green tea ice cream. You’ll discover booths selling these in practically every traveler area in Osaka as well as Kyoto.
Hamburg Steak. Not truly a Japanese meal however it’s quite prominent in Kansai region. offered in many restaurants as well as even benefit stores!
In the program of my backpacking journey across the Kansai region, I fell in like deeper as well as deeper with what the kitchens right here had to offer.

MOVIE REVIEW: someday IN AFRICA WITH BROOK SILVA BRAGA

Updated: 02/22/19 | February 22, 2019

Back in July, a buddy suggested I watch the movie A Map for Saturday.

Tetszett.

It is just the very best movie about backpacking.

If you ever wished to understand why we travel as well as about life on the road, you should see this movie. I really show it in hostels to other travelers.

I got the possibility to interview Brook Silva Braga about the movie as well as his experience. Now, Brook has a new movie out about Africa. It’s called someday in Africa. He sent me the screener to preview, as well as now that the movie is out I believed it would be great to chat with him about it.

Nomadic Matt: Why did you make this documentary? It’s extremely different from your last one.
Brook: Yeah, it is truly different as well as I was definitely looking to do something different after ‘A Map for Saturday.’ I got a possibility to travel with Africa about a year back as well as I decided to make this film while on Az utazás. perhaps since ‘A Map for Saturday’ focused so much on the foreigners’ lives this time around I wished to focus on the locals.

In ‘A Map for Saturday’ I stated just about whatever I have to state about travel so I was looking to move to something else, particularly since making a film forces you to online with the exact same topic for a extremely long time so at the end of the process you’re prepared for something else.

Also, if you make the exact same type of film twice people may begin to partner you just keeping that topic as well as I want to cover great deals of different things.

What do you hope people get out of this film?
My hope is people will have a much better comprehending of what life is like for regular people in Africa. I believe it’s regrettable that so much of what we see comes from little pockets of the continent where terrible things are happening while most locations are totally uncovered by western media.

Also, a great deal of the pictures as well as stories that come out of Africa are produced by aid groups or organizations trying to produce rate of interest in a specific cause. I had no vested rate of interest or program so I was just able to tell the stories as I saw them.

How did you choose where you were going to film?
There were some logistical forces guiding me from country to country however I was able to go to a great deal of locations throughout the continent as well as ended up traveling with 12 countries which provided me great deals of choices for filming. I was always on the lookout for fascinating people, locations or circumstances as well as likewise always trying to strike a balance between the different regions of the continent as well as between rural as well as metropolitan environments.

How did you choose who to film? was there an interview process or did you just ask strangers?
It was different every time however frequently I would just be walking around a location as well as encounter somebody fascinating as well as articulate who I believed would make a great subject. There were likewise times where I was trying to get some specific point of view as well as then went looking for somebody who embodied it. That’s exactly how I satisfied Bridgete after costs a month in Malawi attempting to comply with a lady on the day she provided birth.

What were a few of the difficulties of filming in Africa?
In great deals of ways, Africa was a extremely simple location to film since people were so open with their lives as well as not at all self-conscious in front of the camera. The difficulties were logistical since if you lose your Duel Systems P2 adapter you can be specific you will not discover a replacement anywhere nearby. I was lucky to get with my trip with all the devices intact however it was a relatively constant concern.

Most of the talk about Africa is about hardship as well as war. When making this movie exactly how did those perceptions in shape into what you wished to discuss?
I agree that those topics are covered once again as well as once again as well as I believe there are two primary reasons for it. First, stories from these remote parts of the world only make the newspaper when they’re extraordinary, as well as usually tragic, so we only hear from a location like Zimbabwe when there’s something terrible in the news.

But the other reason is less excusable in my opinion. as well many people composing books, making documentaries or otherwise telling stories about Africa choose what their story will be before ever setting foot on the continent. My objective in making “One Day in Africa” was to show up as somewhat of a blank canvas as well as let the people I satisfied drive the direction of the film rather than some outline I had concocted in Manhattan.

***
While A Map for Saturday will always be one of my preferred travel movies, I discovered someday in Africa to be incredibly insightful as well as honest. You can watch the trailerAz alábbiakban, ha meg akarja vizsgálni.

How To avoid Being Ripped Off By Taxi motorists

From new Delhi to Sydney, every city has its fair share of taxi motorists intent on ripping off tourists. That’s not to say that all taxi motorists are bad. In fact, we have met some great taxi motorists during our travels. but we have also had the occasional bad experience that reminds us to stay on our toes, especially in India and Asia.

Here are a few lessons we have learned over the years that help us to avoid being overcharged. a lot of of these ideas apply whether you’re in a cab, tuk tuk, water taxi or even a horse-drawn cart!

1. know where you’re going

A clueless vacationer is easy prey. before you hail a ride, find out where your destination is located. Take a screenshot of the address (preferably in the local language) and a map with your destination clearly marked.

We highly recommend using an offline GPS app (like MAPS.ME) to pinpoint your destination too. The app will show you the route and distance to your destination. This makes it much much easier to set a fair price with the driver. Offline GPS apps also allow you to monitor your journey while you are in the taxi, even if you don’t have any data.

If the taxi motorist is taking you on the ‘scenic route’, you will soon know about it.

2. Ask a local

Ask a local how much a taxi to your destination must cost. If you are at an airport or bus station, often there are vacationer information desks that can give you advice. Your hostel or guesthouse will also often have estimated fares from airports and bus stations on their website. Otherwise, you can always email your accommodation to ask how much a taxi must cost.

Most cities have good and bad taxi companies. It pays to find out the best taxi company before you arrive so you don’t hail an expensive or unsafe cab. official taxis are nearly always more effective to unmarked cars.

3. If the taxi has a meter, use it!

If the taxi has a meter, ask to use it and enjoy it like a hawk. You can normally find the metered rates on a sticker inside the taxi. often the per kilometre rate may be slightly higher for late night rides. Make sure the meter and the advertised rate match up. normally using the meter gives you a better deal than a set price.

But there are a few catches. You will still need to make sure the motorist doesn’t pull a fast one on you. check the motorist isn’t taking you on the ‘scenic route’ by following your journey using an offline GPS app. enjoy the meter to make sure there are no sudden jumps in price. If there are sudden increases, it probably indicates the motorist is tampering with the meter. In this case, make sure to speak up!

4. set the price before you get in

If the taxi doesn’t have a meter, you need to set the price before you get in. Be very clear on your destination then set a price with the driver. only pay once you have arrived at your destination.

Once you have agreed on a price, check if there are any catches to this deal. For example, in India a cheap price will probably include a stop at a souvenir shop that pays commission to your driver. This was all part of our love/hate relationship with India! We even had a taxi motorist in Russia try to convince us that the price he had quoted was per kilometre. Ja, igaz.

It’s also not uncommon to be given a price of 50 (insert cheap local currency here) only for the motorist to say that he indicated us dollars at the end of your ride. Szemtelen!

5. Barter (but don’t be an a**hole)

One word: karma.

When setting a price with a taxi driver, you will probably need to barter to get a fair price. There are no hard and fast policies about how best to barter, but we always try to do it with a smile. know how much the fare must be, see what the motorist uses and go from there. A successful barter is when both motorist and passenger are happy!

In lots of places that we have visited, taxi motorists are some of the hardest working but lowest paid people in the country. It pays to remember this when you are bartering over a fare. how much does 50 cents indicate to you compared to your driver?

We are strong believers in travel karma, and perspective is everything. Hammering a taxi motorist over a few cents will probably annoy your driver, and may be a lot more trouble than it’s worth. It can also cause a rip off down the track and a grumpy ride.

6. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

It’s easy to get sucked in to a taxi that is promising an extraordinary fare. but in our experience, this normally leads to drama. finding a motorist that is going to take you on your 3-hour ride for less than the price of a bus normally indicates there is a big catch.

It may be a sharEd taxi.

AN in-depth guide TO planning A LESBIAN friendly trip

Posted: 4/3/17 | April 3rd, 2017

In this guest post, Dani from Globetrottergirls shares her tips and advice to help you plan the ultimate lesbian friendly travel experience!

When I started planning my first trip to Latin America in 2010, I wondered what it would be like to travel with my girlfriend in strictly Catholic countries, many of them known for their culture of machismo.

Would we be safe?

Would we get the chance to connect with local lesbians or meet other lesbian travelers?

I had traveled extensively around Europe and I’d been to LGBT hot spots in the us but had no idea what to expect in other parts of the world. Back then, there wasn’t much information online, and social media wasn’t as ubiquitous as it is now.

Today, planning a lesbian trip has gotten much easier since then. Still, if you are not traveling to a lesbian or a pride festival, planning an LGBT-friendly trip can be daunting and overwhelming.

Where do you start?

How to go about finding queer-friendly destinations and meeting other gay travelers?

Like me, a lot of lesbians (especially first-time travelers) feel more comfortable traveling in an environment where they feel safe. with that in mind, I’ve compiled this ultimate resource for lesbian travelers, including websites you’ll want to bookmark for trip planning, LGBT-friendly booking sites, travel opportunities for same-sex couples or lesbian solo travelers, and how to meet like-minded people during your trip!

Tartalomjegyzék

1. Trip-Planning Strategies
2. how to find Lesbian-Friendly travel Companies
3. how to find Lesbian-Owned and -Friendly Accommodation
4. the best Lesbian tours and Cruises
5. how to meet other Lesbians While Traveling
6. how to travel safe as a Lesbian

1. Trip-Planning Strategies

Maybe you’ve already got a destination in mind, or maybe you’re completely open. If this is your first international trip, you might want to play it safe and visit a country with liberal views on same-sex relationships — and not one of the 70 countries that have legal LGBT discrimination.

The us department of state is a good place to start to gather LGBTQ travel Information, including some pointers on staying safe as a queer traveler.

Both the international Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex association (ILGA), a nonprofit human rights group in Geneva, and the international Gay & Lesbian travel association (IGLTA) are excellent resources. The former has a detailed overview of sexual orientation laws around the world, and the latter has good trip-planning tools.

Damron publishes a complete travel guide by and for lesbians every year, including listings in North America, South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and major cities in Europe and Asia. It also includes festivals, lesbian tours, and conferences, as well as information for vegetarians and multiracial couples and on wheelchair access, among much more.

Passport magazine is one of the only gay and lesbian travel magazines still in publication in the United States. It covers LGBT travel, culture, adventure, and style. It’s the perfect go-to if you’re looking for some lesbian travel inspiration.

If this is your first trip abroad, and you don’t want to travel too far from the US, I recommend Costa Rica, which is very LGBT friendly. Manuel Antonio has plenty of gay-owned hotels, and Playa Samara, my favorite beach in Costa Rica, even has a lesbian-owned B&B right on the beach.

Mexico is one of the countries that surprised me most in terms of gay-friendliness: Not even in San Francisco did I see as many gay couples openly holding hands and making out in parks as I did in Mexico City!

Moreover, Puerto Vallarta is the “gay capital” of Mexico, and along with the nearby beaches of the Riviera Nayarit, it makes for an easy getaway from the us — where you can be out without worrying about how you may be perceived.

2. how to find Lesbian-Friendly travel Companies

The IGLTA has a comprehensive list of all of its official partners, which include companies like Delta, Hilton, Marriott, and Disney.

Expedia has a separate section for queer travelers, featuring LGBT-welcoming hotels and guides to top gay hotspots.

3. how to find lesbian-Owned and -Friendly Accommodation

The best place to look for lesbian-owned and lesbian-friendly accommodation is Purple Roofs, the world’s largest travel directory of LGBT-friendly accommodation. Over 4,800 bed & breakfasts, hotels, vacation rentals, and other properties are listed. simply type in your destination and all available properties there will be listed. You’ll see right away if it’s lesbian or gay owned, the price per night, and a description of the property.

Another option is to look for tag Approved® hotels, which are those that are not only LGBT friendly but also support the LGBT community in their employment policies and services. (TAG stands for travel Advocacy Group.) There are around 2,000 suchhotels, including several big chains, such as Hilton Hotels, Marriott, Sheraton, and The W. similar to Purple Roofs, you can type in your destination and be shown a listing of all tag Approved® hotels there.

While Purple Roofs focuses on small, independent businesses, tag features mostly bigger hotel corporations. The advantage of tag is that it features many hotels that are members of travel reward programs, so if you are into travel hacking and looking to use points in a lesbian-friendly hotel, the tag website will be more useful for you.

Not every lesbian cares if she is staying in explicitly LGBT-friendly accommodations. So if you’re not sure of the kind of place you’re checking in to, you may well run into this issue: having to decide if you are comfortable requesting a double bed when you are given two single beds. I don’t know how many times my partner and I were shown a room with two beds after explicitly booking a double bed. most receptionists simply assume that two girls traveling together are friends or sisters; rarely do they assume that they are a couple.

I do remember situations in which I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate to ask (in Malaysia, for example, where LGBT rights are largely unrecognized).

If you’re confident enough, you can ask for a room with one bed instead, which is what I started doing after I got tired of squeezing into a single bed with my girlfriend. but not everyone is comfortable doing this, so if you want to be 100% sure that you’re welcomed — especially when traveling as a couple — I recommend booking lesbian-friendly accommodation.

4. the best Lesbian tours and Cruises

There are several providers for lesbian tours, the biggest one being Olivia. Olivia offers all-lesbian vacations, ranging from resorts to cruises. Olivia always buys out a whole resort or charters the entire ship to make sure the trip is a safe space for women so that they feel like they can be out without worrying about anything.

In addition to ships or resorts filled with lesbians, Olivia also offer the best lesbian entertainment on their vacations, including artists like Melissa Etheridge, the Indigo Girls, Wanda Sykes, and Lily Tomlin.

Olivia is a great option for couples, but also for solo travelers who can’t find anyone to travel with but aren’t ready to go on a trip by themselves. one of the things that make Olivia special is that women come together on their trips to meet new people and form friendships, and many women travel with Olivia over and over again.

Diva Destinations is a UK-based lesbian tour operator that offers hosted lesbian group holidays around Europe, for example, the Women’s festival in Lesvos, Greece; a golf-themed cruise; and river cruises around Europe. (These are not limited to lesbian travelers from the UK, by the way.)

R family Vacations, founded by Rosie O’Donell, started out as “R family Cruises” but has since grown into other kinds of LGBT family vacations. In addition to its popular family vacations for lesbian parents and their kids, the company has launched an “Adult Vacation” line, which offers kid-free vacations, not strictly for lesbian travelers but both gay men and women. In contrast to R’s family vacation line, the adult holidays aim to connect LGBT travelers without kids.

Another company that offers mixed cruises (for gay men as well as lesbians), is Aquafest Cruises, which specializes in discounted LGBT cruises to destinations such as Alaska, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Mexico, and Asia. Aquafest’s cruises are considerably cheaper than other gay and lesbian cruises (including the above mentioned R adult Cruises), and it also offers themed cruises around celebrations like Mardi Gras and Halloween. entertainment on board includes lesbian get-togethers, singles get-togethers, theme dance parties, gay Olympics, stand-up comedy, cabaret, and celebrity singers.

Out Of office is a newer travel start-up that arranges high-end holidays for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender couples as well as gay-friendly flights, hotels, transfers, and excursions. It also offers several itineraries aimed at lesbian travelers (guaranteeing that the tour operators and hotels used in the itineraries are lesbian-friendly), and group trips for LGBT travelers to destinations such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, and China.

5. how to meet other Lesbians While Traveling

These days, the easiest way to meet other lesbians while traveling is through dating apps (even if you’re not looking for a hook-up). I’ve met other lesbian solo travelers this way while backpacking through South America, had a girl show me around Milan, and got a great introduction to Tel Aviv’s lesbian scene, all of which I wouldn’t have otherwise. I am still in touch with most of the girls and happy to return the favor when they’re visiting new York.

The dating best apps to connect with other lesbians are HER (the most popular lesbian one) and all-gender dating apps like Tinder, OkCupid or PlentyOfHal.
