IS SOUTHEAST ASIA safe FOR TRAVELERS?

Last Updated: 02/02/20 | February 2nd, 2020

Southeast Asia is one of the most popular regions in the world for backpackers and budget travelers. It’s home to a well-worn travel trail that dates back to the 1960s and ’70s, stretching across Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore.

I’ve been checking out the area frequently considering that 2004 (I even spent a few years living in Thailand). It really does have something for everyone: bustling cities, delicious food, spectacular diving, lots of outdoor activities, historic sites — the list goes on.

A legjobb? It’s budget friendly!

But is Southeast Asia safe?

That’s a question I get asked often, especially by solo travelers (or their anxious families).

Generally speaking, Southeast Asia is exceptionally safe. In fact, it’s one of the safest regions in the world.

You aren’t going to really face any physical danger, and it’s rare to even get robbed or mugged. people are nice, respectful, and friendly.

That said, here’s everything you need to know to stay safe in Southeast Asia!

11 ways to stay safe in Southeast Asia

Staying safe in Southeast Asia doesn’t take a lot of work. Southeast Asia is an exceptionally safe place to backpack and travel – even if you’re traveling solo, and even as a solo female traveler. violent attacks are rare. There are some common scams around, like the motorbike scam where vendors try to charge you for damage to their bike, but for the most part, this is a safe place to travel. people are great and valuable and you’re unlikely to get into trouble. The people who do tend to be involved with drinking or drugs or sex tourism. stay away from that stuff and you’ll be fine. That said, here are 11 ways to make sure nothing is going to happen on your trip:

1. enjoy for purse-snatchers – Purse-snatching is rare, but it does happen. To avoid the most common types of theft, don’t wear your purse or bag over just one carry — instead, wear it across the front of your body. Also, lots of purse-snatchers will be on a scooter, so take particular caution when walking alongside traffic.

2. Be extra careful in traffic – a lot of injuries in Southeast Asia are caused by vehicles. Be especially careful walking in busy cities like Hanoi or if you are driving (especially scooters).

3. Don’t do drugs – drugs like marijuana are easily easily accessible in Southeast Asia (especially in party locations, like the full Moon Party). but they are illegal! Fines are heavy — and if you get caught, expect to spend time in jail or pay a large bribe. save yourself the hassle and don’t do any drugs while you’re in the region.

4. wear a helmet – If you’re renting or riding a scooter or motorbike, be sure to wear a helmet. also wear proper clothing and footwear. I’ve seen a lot of road rash during my time in Southeast Asia!

5. look out for bedbugs – Unfortunately, bedbugs are a reality in Southeast Asia. though rare, you will likely encounter them at some point if you’re traveling around the region for any length of time. always check your accommodation in advance. If it looks dirty, simply step on. Also, never put your backpack on your bed. That way, if the bed is contaminated, at least your backpack won’t also be contaminated.

6. Bring a lock – While theft in dorm rooms is rare, you don’t want to take any chances. Hostels nearly always have lockers available. Bring a lock so you can store your ownerships safely while you’re out and about.

7. hide your valuables – When you’re out exploring, keep your budget and valuables hidden in your backpack (or leave them loved up in your accommodation). carry some cash in your pockets, but keep your cards and other valuables out of reach. a lot of theft is opportunistic, so if you’re vigilant, you’ll have nothing to worry about!

8. Don’t party solo – Make sure if you’re out partying that you do it with pals or people you can trust. Don’t get so drunk that you can’t get home safely. (If you’re taking part in the full Moon party in Thailand, you can find certain safety ideas in this blog post.)

9. keep your passport – never give away your passport as a deposit when booking things like accommodation or rentals. always make sure you get it back, or else you might not see it again. (And be sure to keep a digital scan of your passport in your email inbox just in case.)

10. stay away from animals – stray dogs (as well as monkeys) typically carry diseases, such as rabies (which can be fatal). To avoid getting bitten, don’t pet stray dogs or wild monkeys.

11. get travel insurance– While Southeast Asia is normally safe, unexpected occurrences can still occur. Cover yourself by getting travel insurance. It has the potential to save you thousands of dollars while also giving you peace of mind. I never leave home without it!

5 common Scams in Southeast Asia

While Southeast Asia is normally quite safe, there are still a few common travel scams. here are four of the most common scams — and how you can avoid getting fooled by them!

1. The Taxi/Tuk-tuk Overcharge
This is one of the most common travel scams out there — you’ll encounter it all across Southeast Asia. Either the motorist will tell you the taxi meter is broken and try to charge you a high rate, or you’ll see the cost on the meter skyrocket faster than Superman!

For tuk-tuks, you’ll need to discuss in advance, because motorists will quote a price much higher than what the ride must cost. To avoid being ripped off, you’ll first need to know how much your ride must cost. the best way to figure this out is to ask your hostel or hotel staff for a quote so you have a frame of reference (or google it, if you’re just arriving).

If the motorist tries to discuss the rate with you, offer them the right rate. If they refuse, just leave and find someone who will put the meter on. (Then, if the meter seems to be going up too quickly, have them pull over and get out.)

Many tourism boards let you report bad cab drivers, so be sure to always make a mental note of their ID number when you get in the cab.

2. Motorbike Scam
Southeast Asia is a terrific place to rent a scooter or motorcycle and get off the beaten path. but there is a common scam you’ll want to be aware of.

Here’s how it goes: You’ll rent a bike and then when you bring it back, the owner will demand additional payment or expensive repair services because there is some “damage” you didn’t know about. often the owner will send someone to mess with the bike or steal it so you have to pay.

To avoid this, take photos of the bike first to paper any previous damage. Go around it with the owner so they know what you are taking pictures of.

Once you rent it, use your own lock and keep the bike out of sight and off main streets when you park it.

Also, always make sure you get travel insurance so you can make a claim if there is an issue.

3. Your Attraction is closed for Lunch
I admit that I fell for this one when I first pertained to Thailand. A friendly local will technique you and inform you that the attraction you want to check out (often a temple) is closed for any number of reasons (religious ceremony, holiday, etc.).

They’ll then try to guide you to a different attraction (or typically a shop), where you’re heavily pressured to purchase something or pay a high admission price.

To avoid this scam, be sure to ask your accommodation staff before you leave to confirm that the attraction is open. then find the main entrance or ticket counter and see for yourself. opening and closing times are nearly always available online too, so you can typically look them up just to be safe.

Generally speaking, a lot of attractions in Southeast Asia don’t close for lunch. They either close for the day or not at all.

4. The drug deal Gone Bad
This scam is common anywhere there is a party in Southeast Asia. You’ll be in a popular vacationer area (usually a party place) and someone will offer you drugs.

If you say yes, before you know it, a real cop is will be on the scene! They’ll insist that they are going to arrest you unless you can pay a large fine ideal there (i.e., a bribe).

Caught red-handed, you’ll probably pay the bribe rather than go to jail. simply put: Don’t get drugs in other countries!

5. The Taxi Scam
Only use taxis that use a meter. If the meter is rigged or they refuse to use it, just get out and find a new taxi (more on this below!).

Is the Food safe in Southeast Asia?

If the food weren’t safe here, I’d likely never come back. street food is nearly always safe (it’s crucial to the cultures of the locals). In fact, it’s normally a lot more safe than restaurants, because the operation is so basic and the turnover so fast.

When trying to find somewhere to eat, find a place with a crowd, as well as one with children — if parents think it’s safe for the kids, then it’s safe for you! Anywhere with a lot of people (specifically locals) is a good indicator that the food is both good and safe.

Be sure to wash your hands before eating (hand sanitizer is good for that), as you’ll likely have been out and about all day and may have picked up all sorts of germs.

Can You drink the tap Water in Southeast Asia?

The tap water in Southeast Asia will vary from country to country, but as a general policy I would not recommend you drink the water unless you have a water purifier like the Lifestraw or Steripen.

Are Taxis safe in Southeast Asia?

Taxis in Southeast Asia are safe — but they also have a track record for overcharging (see above) or taking longer routes to diveup the fare.

Always make sure your motorist is using the meter (and that the meter is not moving overly quickly). If you encounter a problem, simply get out and find a new taxi.

A better option is get hold of or Uber (depending on where you are). You’ll be able to see your driver, track your ride, and make complaints if you have a problem. It’s the best way to get around, when available.

Is Southeast Asia safe for Solo Travelers?

Southeast Asia is one of the best places in the world for solo travelers. There are tons checking out the region each and every year, lots of of them traveling solo for the first time (it’s terrific for both new and veteran travelers alike).

With a little common sense, a solo traveler won’t have to worry much about safety here. There is a well-worn backpacker trail, so you’ll never be far from other travelers. That indicates it’s easy to meet people in case you decide you’d rather travel in a group for some (or all) of your trip.

Is Southeast Asia safe for Solo female Travelers?

Female travelers have additional safety worries they need to be aware of. That being said, Southeast Asia is still one of the best (and a lot of safe) regions for solo female travel.

By following the ideas above, as well as the same precautions you’d take at home (such as not wandering alone at night intoxicated, keeping an eye on your drink while at the bar, etc.), a solo female traveler will be able to have an incredible check out to Southeast Asia without worrying too much about her safety.

And as pointed out above, with so lots of solo travelers — including lots of women — in the region, it’s easy to find others to spend time with in case you’re feeling insecure or unsafe.

Should You check out Southeast Asia?

So, is Southeast Asia safe?

Teljesen!

It’s incredibly unlikely that anything will happen. and even less so if you follow the recommendations provided above.

Be sure to get travel insurance just in case something goes wrong. The past is not prologue and you always want to play it safe. travel insurance was there when I lost my bag, broke my camera, and popped an eardrum while diving in Thailand. Cayo Guillermo, Cuba – The hidden jewel of The Caribbean

one of our most precious, if not the most luxurious (and costly) experiences in Cuba, was definitely our visit to Cayo Guillermo.

Located on the northern coast of the country between the Bay of Dogs and the Atlantic Ocean, the place is a true paradise. think perfectly blue hues, fine white sand beaches, sunsets, Cuba libres and cigars. It’s a truly magnificent coastline and a rightful star of the Caribbean.

Cayo Guillermo was the place that made us realise we want more of this and sparked the plan to create our travel lifestyle. It was a major flashpoint in our lives, which has since changed dramatically after we stepped on one of the most amazing beaches we’ve seen so far.

Idyllic Cayo Guillermo

Even though it’s not such a backpacking destination, it’s well worth visiting for some chill time. The idyllic coastline is studded with resorts and the only way to enjoy it is to stay in one. However, we can’t stress enough how worth it is to spend a few dollars more from your Cuba budget and chill by the pristine waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Especially if you are thinking of Varadero instead. Cayo Guillermo, in our humble opinion, is a 100% nicer destination in terms of accommodation and beach quality.

We stayed at the all-inclusive Iberostar Daiquiri resort and couldn’t really fault it. The staff were friendly and helpful plus the freshly prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner was delicious. but the best part of the resort, aside from the great food and beaches, were the bar staff, restlessly shaking Mojitos, Pina Coladas and mixing up wicked Cuba libres.

Just don’t ask us how many of those we had during our stay, we just couldn’t resist.

You’ll need to have travel insurance in order to travel to Cuba. It’s actually mandatory that all travellers have insurance, and you may or may not be asked to show proof of insurance on arrival. To get a free quote from world Nomads, just enter your details below:

The hidden Playa Pilar beach

If you find yourself in Cayo Guillermo, you must visit the stunning, 500 meter long Playa Pilar beach. It’s a true white sand and crystal clear water paradise.

The water here is so clear that you don’t even need snorkeling equipment. As soon as you stop moving, a school of colourful fish come to investigate you, pure bliss. We spent a whole day here enjoying the beach, swimming, and chilling out.

Mesmerized by the beauty of this seacoast we even missed the last bus back to our resort. luckily we were picked up by two friendly Spaniards or it would have been another long walk, doh! Don’t forget to check the timetable for the last bus back as there aren’t any taxis hanging around either.

The beach was located around 7km from our resort, but as adventurous and money savvy as we are, we decided to walk there along the coast. We checked out the map and on paper it seemed easily accessible, in reality, it wasn’t. We do not recommend this option.

While it was fun to explore, it was blazing hot and at times we had to cross construction sites, which wasn’t that nice. The winding coastline stretched into a much longer distance than 7km. Eventually, we had to get back on the main road as the shore turned into the prickly woods. Miraculously we caught a cab on a deserted road and finally reached the hidden beach.

So please don’t waste your time and energy, get a local bus from your resort or hail a cab and spend more precious time enjoying the diamond dust-like beach. There are 4 hop on hop off buses per day, going between the resorts and stopping at Playa Pilar.

Foodwise there isn’t much around, but you will find a cosy bar-restaurant built in the dunes, right on the beach. prices range from 20 CUC to 40 CUC (1 CUC = $1 USD) per main course so you might want to have a hearty breakfast at your resort.

Cruising around Jardines del Rey

Visiting one of the most amazing coastlines in Cuba calls for a tiny bit of luxury lifestyle. Jardines del Rey, an archipelago off the northern coast of Cuba is well-known amongst snorkeling and diving enthusiasts for its stunning 200 km long coral reef.

One of the easiest ways to experience this magnificent part of the world is by taking a catamaran cruise. We booked a catamaran trip via an agent at our resort but you can always check out the Marina Cayo Guillermo directly.

They offer a wide selection of all-day tours from snorkeling to deep-water fishing. We, however, were taken to the marina in Cayo Coco a bit further away but hindsight is a wonderful thing.Körülbelül 80 dollárért személyenként Catamaran utazásunk 2 snorkeling és 2 úszómegállat, ebéd (csirke vagy homár) és egy nagyon örülök, mélységtelen rum bár.

Despite the costly and lengthy journey, a few hiccups with the car and our lack of Spanish, we still had a brilliant time and would recommend visiting Cayo Guillermo when in Cuba.

Note, this post has been updated in 2022 to include the current best things to do in Puerto Vallarta, the current prices and addresses, and more. take pleasure in your trip.

1. Walk…Everywhere!

I have to put walking as #1 on the list of things to do in Puerto Vallarta. exploring on foot is the best way to get a feel for the city, and a lot of areas of PV are reachable by walking.

Mexico is already one of the least expensive countries to travel to, but when you can do things for free, like walking and sightseeing, you can save even a lot more money.

Walking the streets of Puerto Vallarta is the best way to see it all
This is a great way to see what the vendors are selling, to people watch, and to get a lay of the land. You never know what you’ll stumble across when discovering the city on foot — just make sure to wear good shoes as the sidewalks and roads are very uneven.

Note: the best time to travel to Mexico if you want to walk around cities would be in the wintertime months, or in the carry season. Otherwise, it can be unbearably hot and you’ll a lot of likely want to be at the beach all day.

2. join a Food Tour

Did you know that Mexico’s cuisine has made the list of Intangible cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO? This award hasn’t been approved to any other national food group.

Mexican food is so much a lot more than tacos and quesadillas and the best way to learn a lot more about the tasty cuisine is to join a tour. This is a need to do in Puerto Vallarta for foodies.

We’ve done food excursions all around the world, and our much-loved ones are in Mexico.

In Puerto Vallarta, check out Vallarta Food Tours. This company uses a mix of culture, walking, and food tours, making it a great way to learn about the city of PV while concurrently feasting and working off the calories.

Visiting the taco stands is a highlight of a food excursion in Puerto VallarTa!

Ezután megjelenik a szabadtéri auditoriumban, amelyet pálmafák vesznek körül.

4. Élvezze a naplementét

Great checking out places include anywhere along the Malecon, up the hill behind the Church of Our lady of Guadalupe, or from El Barracuda which is our much-loved beach bar.

Miután a nap leesik, a párt a PV-ben kezdődik – olyan sok bár és klub van, az éjszakai élet Puerto Vallarta legendás.

A Puerto Vallarta naplemente látványos

* MEGJEGYZÉS: Puerto Escondido egy másik epikus csendes-óceáni tengerparti célpontja Mexikóban. Ha van esélye, próbálja meglátogatni is.

5. Rúgás vissza a Playa Las Gemelas-ra

Surprisingly, just about 20 minutes drive south of Puerto Vallarta, you’ll find beaches that look like they must be Cancun or Playa del Carmen rather than the Pacific.

Túrázza le a lépcsőket a Playa Las Gemelas-hoz

Együtt járnithe booze, you’ll get some tasty food to help soak up the alcohol.

The dishes we had were full portions of fish tacos, meat tacos, seafood “enchiladas”, onion rings, crickets (yes, crickets!) and delectable dessert.

Not only will you be having fun, and feeling a bit tipsy by the end of it, but you’ll learn a lot about the traditions and creation of these alcoholic beverages.

Tasting Mezcal, with a side of crickets on our food & booze tour

We had a great day with our guide. So much fun in fact, that she took us out for some late-night shenanigans where the expats and locals like to hangout.

Click here to learn a lot more about the Mex-ology Tequila, Tacos & cocktails excursion on get Your Guide, or if you prefer, you can learn a lot more and book through Viator.

7. Eat Fresh Oysters

While Mexico is one of the best countries in the world for food and there’s absolutely a Puerto Vallarta restaurant for everyone, often it’s great to eat street (beach) food. If you’re an oyster lover, you’ll be delighted to know that you can get fresh oysters on the beach.

Just under the bridge that crosses the River Cuale, you’ll see lots of vendors selling these tasty morsels.

Plastic tables and chairs are set up so you can sit and take pleasure in your plate of food by the water, or you can take them to go. squeeze some lime juice on, sprinkle with some salt and add some hot sauce if you like. Élvezd!

8. visit San Pancho

About an hour’s drive from Puerto Vallarta is the beach town of San Pancho (San Francisco), which is one of the best day trips from Puerto Vallarta.

This small town isn’t as quiet as it once was, but it’s still a great place to visit. What’s unusual is that even though it’s not a very big place, there are lots of things to do in San Pancho.

You can go golfing for the morning (or late afternoon), eat some really good international food, take Spanish lessons, do yoga, go surfing, enjoy the baby turtles be released and more.

It’s a cool place to spend the afternoon as it’s just an hour away from Puerto Vallarta. update 2022: sadly, the golf course in San Pancho is closed now.

To get from Puerto Vallarta to San Pancho, you can rent a car, take the bus for around 50 pesos, or join a day excursion of San Pancho and nearby Sayulita.

Note: the ocean here is quite rough and isn’t a great place for swimming. You could check out Bucerias for swimming.

9. walk The Malecon

One of the lots of great things about Puerto Vallarta is the long Malecon (oceanfront promenade) which runs for about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile). This is the best spot to take pleasure in a stroll, without having to deal with the busy traffic that whizzes along the narrow streets.

Along the Malecon, you have the beautiful ocean on one side, and lots of shops, restaurants, and bars on the other (selling $1 margaritas and Coronas). There are also many art installations and street performances here.

The Malecon is the hot-spot, especially in the late afternoon and evenings when it’s a cooler temperature. and actually, wandering along the Malecon is one of the most popular things to do in La Paz as well.

The Malecon always has something going on

Where to stay in Puerto Vallarta

There are many resorts, hotels, boutiques, hostels, Airbnbs, and apartments for rent in Puerto Vallarta. There really is something for everyone, with Airbnb and Booking.com being the most popular ways to book.

10. join a chocolate Making Class

The Choco museum is one of the lots of complimentary things to do in Puerto Vallarta. If you’re interested in learning the history behind cocoa, plus finding out how chocolate is made (from harvest to

JAPAN VISA: list OF travel agencies certified by the embassy

because of the sheer volume of applications, the Japanese embassy doesn’t accept direct or walk-in applications, except in rare special cases. Instead, traveler and visit visa applications should be coursed through an officially designated travel agency, which will then compile and submit the applications in bulk.

The downside of this system, of course, is the service fee. The embassy’s processing of the visa is FREE-OF-CHARGE. but the travel agency will collect a service charge per application. but this system has guaranteed a fast, efficient way to process visa applications. In fact, the Korean embassy has followed suit and employed a similar model recently. The fee varies from agency to agency, so if budget is a concern, contact them before showing up at their office.

Here’s how to apply for a Japan visa:

Helló mindenkinek,
A hosszú távú utazás valójában minden, ami feltört!

5 ways To save money on Airfare

Whenever you sit down on a plane, there’s a good chance that the person sitting next to you paid far less than you did. This isn’t always because they booked early or had a travel agent find them a deal, it’s normally because they know a few easy tricks to save money on flights.

Dariece and I have been travelling for 7 years and have taken many flights in that time.

Our experience has taught us some severe money-saving tricks. In this article, I’m going to share my secrets with you to make sure you can board your next flight with the confidence that you found the best deal possible.

See Also: 21 Hacks To save money On All Travel-Related Bookings Online

1. use The ideal Booking Engine

By using a booking engine with the ideal features, you can save some severe money on flights. depend on me, not all flight booking sites are created equal. A colleague of mine recently introduced me to JustFly.com. This site has all of the features that make a terrific flight booking engine.

Just Fly is a flight aggregate service like Google Flights & Kayak, but it also uses price adjustments and purchase guarantees. Their overall mission is to sell the least expensive airline tickets possible, assemble the most advanced team of travel experts in the world to help customers make the ideal purchase, maintain an efficient and technologically stable platform and innovate the market while not imitating any other service.

This site works like a lot of other booking engines, but allows you to choose the most popular flights with the shortest flight times and the least expensive price. It also shows you alternative dates so if you’re flexible, you can save money by flying on a different day.

The site also has a terrific support team that can you can actually call to ask for help. That’s something I haven’t really seen before and is a feature that would be terrific for beginner flight bookers.

2. clear Your Cache

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, any time you’re booking flights you must clear your cache or search in incognito mode. flight booking sites can be evil. They track customers returning to the site time and time again and they’ll actually jack up the price to try to urge buyers to make a purchase.

This is urgency marketing at its best (and a lot of annoying), but thankfully you can avoid it with a few quick clicks of the keyboard. simply follow the instructions in this post and search for the same flight again. If you’ve been tracking the flight for a week or two, the airline or flight booking site has been tracking you too.

After clearing your cache, you’ll likely see a price that’s $50 – $200 cheaper. just look at what we saved on a recent flight from Costa Rica to Cuba. We saved $125 / ticket ($250 total) just by clearing the cache.

This is the same exact flight searched on the same exact site within seconds of each other. The top image is with a cleared cache!
Note: Clearing the cache is different for every browser, here are instructions for the most common ones:

Google Chrome

internet böngésző

Firefox

Szafari

3. Book At The ideal Time

According to a 2014 study conducted by CheapAir.com, the optimal time to book your flight is 48 days (about 7 weeks) before your proposed departure date. There is a lot of dispute surrounding this hack, but CheapAir’s study was pretty detailed and from experience I can say that I agree with the results.

If we book our flight too early, we typically see the prices go down closer to, while last-minute bookings are nearly always a lot more expensive. try to start searching for flights 48 days before departure, book it and stop looking after that… enjoying prices change can drive you crazy!

4. Book flight & Hotel

Have you ever noticed that you can choose to book your flight with a hotel on a lot of major flight booking engines? What you may not have known is that by clicking this tab, you can access secret savings that are only available to those who book their flight as a package with accommodation.

I’m not talking about booking an all-inclusive holiday or a excursion package. All you have to do is click the “Hotel+Flight” tab and book a hotel with the flight. seems easy enough right?

On a recent sample booking we conducted on a flight from Vancouver to Bangkok, we saved over $100 on the flight cost by including a hotel in the booking. and you can choose a low-cost hotel and only stay one night as well. These are substantial savings.

5. use Your best rewards credit scores Card

You shouldn’t just use your rewards card for flight booking. You must use it for enagyon vásárlás lehetséges.
