Pai is a small town located in northern Thailand and due to its charm and the lots of different things to do in Pai, it has become a popular place for travellers.

From checking out waterfalls and hiking the Pai Canyon, to checking out the big Buddha and exploring by scooter, Pai uses many attractions for backpackers, travellers, expats and everyone in between.

For such a small place, the list of things to do in Pai is huge! This town is growing and so are the lots of activities available in Pai for travellers. This is absolutely one of the best places to visit in Thailand.

The road between the northern city of Chiang Mai and Pai is an exciting adventure all on its own. In fact, this journey was the main reason I went to Pai in the first place.

But to my surprise, Pai was a town that stole my heart, and I would return to in a heartbeat. In fact, checking out Pai was one of my Southeast Asia highlights.

1. learn To ride a Scooter

Learning to ride a scooter is first on my list of things to do in Pai for a reason — it’s generally an essential activity in this tiny town. like me, if you have never ridden a motorbike or scooter before, Pai is the place to don a helmet and try.

Why is learning to drive a scooter essential? Well, lots of of the activities in Pai aren’t actually in the town center, but a couple of minutes drive out-of-town.

Because Pai is popular for tourists renting scooters as their main mode of transportation, there aren’t too lots of tuk-tuks in town. Plus, part of the charm of Pai is that there isn’t much traffic, making it a good place for newbies to learn.

That all being said, tourists walk around Pai like mummies, all bandaged up from scooter accidents. So much so, that you don’t even need to ask somebody “what happened” when you see their battered knee, it’s just assumed it was a scooter accident.

Make sure you wear a helmet, drive cautiously, and of course, don’t drink and drive.

I rented a scooter for two full days while I was in Pai and it cost 500 Baht for both days for an automatic scooter, which was a great deal. It was a lot of fun learning how to ride, and was also a beneficial indicates of transport for getting around to the lots of things to do in Pai.

There are lots of different rental shops along the main walking street in Pai. You will have to leave a cash deposit that you will get back once you return the scooter in its original condition — don’t leave your passport, even if they ask.

At the night markets, you will also be tempted by the shopping. There are souvenirs, herbal remedies, clothing, and a lot more – generally anything you could think of, you’ll find!

But regardless of whether or not you want to get something, the markets are always a lot of fun and are one of the complimentary things to do in Pai.

3. Climb to The big White Buddha (Wat Phra That Mae Yen)

If you have been backpacking Thailand for a while, checking out another Buddha statue might not sound all that appealing, but this one is worth it simply for the view!

In my opinion, out of all of the things to do in Pai, hiking the Pai Canyon is the best! The Pai Canyon is a beautiful canyon with various hiking trails and lookouts over the countryside.

You will need a scooter or tuk-tuk to get out to the Pai Canyon as it is a few minutes drive out of town. once you’re there, you’ll take pleasure in walking along the canyon ridges and being out in nature.

Hogyan utaztam a Batanes -en csak a P6600 -hoz!

Hogyan lehet eljutni a batánokhoz

To get to Sabtang Island, you will requirement to board the faluwa at Ivana Port. Alykes beach in Zakynthos Greece: A travel guide

Alykes beach may not be one of the best beaches in Greece, but it’s definitely one of the best beaches in Zakynthos. In fact, after travelling around the island for more than two weeks, this was our favourite stretch of sand. 

Not only is this bay filled with softer sand than most Ionian beaches making it easier to walk around and swim without wearing footwear, but it also had one of the best restaurants in Zakynthos located right on the beach.

About Alykes Beach

Alykes beach is a stunning stretch of granulated golden sand that has actually been awarded the blue flag for cleanliness, an honour that is not given to a lot of beaches in the world. In fact, Greece has the second most Blue Flag awarded beaches in the world which is something that they are very proud of. 

It’s perhaps most famous for the massive Alykes beach resort, but despite having one of the biggest beach resorts on the island, it’s still one of the most chilled out beaches in Zakynthos.

Where is Alykes Beach?

Alykes beach is located off the east northeast point of Zakynthos Island, a small island of about 40,000 people in the Ionian Sea in western Greece. This is one of the best places to visit in Greece.

Zakynthos is about 20 kilometres west of mainland Peloponnese Greece and about 249 kilometres west of the capital of Athens City.

Alykes beach itself is located in the town of Katastari in Zakynthos Island. The city has plenty of restaurants, bars and accommodation options and many people will end up choosing Katastari when deciding where to stay in Zakynthos.

How To get To Alykes Beach

Because Zakynthos is a small island and it doesn’t have the best public carry system, I recommend renting a car for the duration of your stay. We rented a car for the entire time we were there and it was the perfect way to get around and see all the things to do in Zakynthos.

A rental car will cost you around €15 – €20 per day depending on the size of the vehicle, insurance and the season in which you travel. 

There are a few public buses that go between Zante town and Akyles Beach, but they stop running in the late afternoon. There are also quite a few tour operators on the main road in Katastari town which offer trips into Zante town and back.

There’s also a touristy road train (Trainiki) that passes by Alykes beach and up to the nearby village of Pigadakia. You can also rent motorbikes, quads, bikes and scooters from tour operators and rental companies on the main roads in town.

Best Time To visit Alykes beach Zakynthos

If you’re coming to Akykes beach Zakynthos on part of a day trip, then you’ll want to time your trip for the best time of day to visit Alykes Beach, and if you’re trying to decide the best time to visit Zakynthos, then you’ll also want to know the best time to visit Greece as a whole.

The best Time of Day To visit Alykes Beach

The best time of day to visit Alykes beach is the same as any beach in Greece. You’ll likely want to arrive mid-day when the sun is directly overhead and illuminating the brilliantly blue Ionian Sea at the beach.

Sunrise is also a great time to visit Alykes beach as you can see the sun climbing up over the Greek Mainland at certain times of the year. Sunset’s a beautiful time to visit as well, but don’t expect to see the sun hit the sea here. If you want to see that you’ll have to go to beaches on the west coast like Porto Limnionus or from the cliffs of Kampi.

The best time of year to visit Alykes Beach

The best time to go to Zakynthos is anytime between March and November when the Sea is warm enough (it’ll be a bit chilly at either end though), the weather is warm and tourist sights, restaurants and accommodations are open.

We prefer to visit Zakynthos in the shoulder season, between March and may or September to early November. The sea is a bit cooler at these times, but there are way fewer people on the island and the tourist sights (like Navagio Beach) are much less crowded.

The summer months (June to August) are also a great time to visit Alykes beach Zakynthos. This is when the Ionian is at its warmest, but daytime temperatures can reach 40°C (104°F) so it’s not really comfortable to be anywhere besides the water. Also, the crowds can take away from the peaceful nature of the beach.

The type of Sand on Alykes Beach

Alykes beach Zakynthos is a unique beach on the island because it actually has nice, granular golden sand. So many other beaches in Zakynthos and in the rest of the Ionian and Mediterranean have pebbles, which make it very uncomfortable to walk on them.

Alykes beach is sandy enough that you can stroll along large stretches of it in bare feet and you can also lay your towel down in the sand comfortably, without having a bunch of stones poking into your backside!

Where To stay Near Alykes Beach

When deciding on where to stay in Zakynthos, you may find that Alykes beach area is a great option. There are plenty of hotels and apartments available, as well as a few cool guest houses and the massive Alykes beach Resort. here are a few of the top-rated places to stay on Alykes Beach.

These cozy and well-decorated studios are just 30 minutes from the sand and are surrounded by a lush garden with a stone-paved sun terrace. Villa Ana Alykes: Set just 100 meters from Alykes Beach, rental property Anna offers a holiday home with 2 comfy air-conditioned rooms with a patio and free wifi. There is a kitchen, dining area and washing machine. Alykanas village Resort: If you’re looking for more of a resort feel then this is likely the best option for you near Alykes Beach. It’s a 4-star hotel with all the amenities you’d expect from a place of this calibre. It gets raving reviews on Booking.com and prices are around €84 – €251 on average per night depending on when you visit. See prices on Booking.com.

Best restaurants Near Alykes Beach

There are so many restaurants to choose from around Alykes Beach, but our favourites are on the sand. In fact, our favourite restaurant in Zakynthos was located on the small jetty that separates Alykes beach from Alykanas beach next door.

Porto Paradiso

This funky little beach bar and restaurant is definitely one of the best restaurants in Zakynthos. It has tasty food, great service and if you order a drink or a meal from here, you can use the beach lounge chairs for free. We spent a couple of afternoons just chilling at this beach bar with a Mykonos beer in hand. Nagyon ajánlott.

To Koukounari Taverna

This is a really popular place with remarkable reviews on Google and trip Advisor. They have a great staff and the food here is delicious. try the Greek dishes like the chicken souvlaki and the chocolate souffle for dessert.

Paporo beach Restaurant

Another great beach restaurant set right on the sand, Paporo is a great option on Alykes Beach. It’s literally right next door to Porto Paradiso. The food here is a bit more expensive and a bit more fancy (with strange dangling shrimp kababs zipping out of the kitchen), but it’s clean, the service is good and you can’t beat the location.

Asteria Taverna

This is another perfectly situated taverna right on Alykes beach. They have delicious Greek food with a really friendly chef and staff. They’re open breakfast, lunch and dinner and they have some tasty dessert pancakes on the menu as well.

Pita break Grill House

This super-local joint is set on the main road back from the beach, but it’s well worth a visit. They serve, you guessed it, delicious pitas and gyros for an economical price (around €2.50 for a pita) and they have ice-cold beer for cheap here as well.

SENTOSA BOARDWALK: The Gateway to Singapore’s Island resort

A bright pink glow was beginning to spread across the horizon when we reached the middle of the boardwalk. Without a word, all of us agreed to stop and view the luminous display of colors in the heavens. We were on a walkway connecting mainland Singapore to the island of Sentosa, and this viewpoint allowed us to fully appreciate the surrounding beauty. We weren’t alone. practically everyone taking the boardwalk halted and took a moment to have a good look at the clouds being painted pink and red by the retiring sun. thank Heavens for the long queue at the monorail station.

Several minutes earlier, my pals Ces, Astrid and I found ourselves amongst the hundreds of people flooding through the front gate of universal Studios Singapore. The Hollywood dreams Parade had just ended, and everyone made their way to the main exit as soon as it was over. Where did you all come from? I was blown away by the sheer volume of the crowd. but I was blown farther away when I set eyes on the queue that snaked towards the monorail station. Our plan was to take the train to go back to the main island, but that would show to be so stressful with this big a crowd.

“You still have some energy left?” I asked the ladies.

“Barely,” replied Ces. “Miért?”

“The line is too long. I say, let’s just walk to the main island.”

I knew that there was a boardwalk somewhere around the area so we scurried around the place searching for it. It wasn’t long until we reached the riverbank and found the bridge that stems from it over the undisturbed channel below.

On the way to the boardwalk, we passed by a cute, merry exhibit by Brazilian-American neo-pop artist Romero Britto. It was an unexpected treat. Our ankles and knees were on the verge of giving up, but our spirit was all of a sudden drenched in a strange mixture of excitement and happiness upon seeing these modern sculptures. The colors just exude gaiety, and the designs just warped us into a time when we found absolute fulfillment in cartoons and animals and drawings. My pals Ces and Astrid could not help but take pictures with these fun and cheerful pieces of art.

A Leisurely Walk

I was under the impression that the Sentosa Boardwalk was just a simple, narrow passageway straddling the channel, but on my first step on it, I knew I was gravely mistaken. The boardwalk is broad enough to harbor flights of stairs, gardens, and travelators. Its nooks are ideal vantage points and its fringes terrific venues for bondings. There was so much to see and admire on that long walk that we stopped numerous times to allow ourselves much more time to take it all in and wallow in its magnificence. the best part was when the sky was painted hot pink by the sun just when it was about to take a dip. The pink glow slowly blended with purple and blue, staging a spectacular totally free show best before us.

As darkness slowly swallowed both islands and the moon reclaimed her dominance, lamps of various shapes and colors illuminated the walkway. It was time for us to leave, and we did with a pleased heart despite aching soles, all the while thinking that the Sentosa Boardwalk is not a gateway but a destination on its own. and a terrific one at that.

How to get there: Take the MRT North east Line going to Harbourfront and alight at the last stop — Harbourfront Station. Walk towards the VivoCity Waterfront Promenade.

MY 31 favorite places TO visit IN THE USA

From sea to shining sea, the united states is home to a diverse landscape — both culturally and physically. spending months traveling across its large landscape gave me a deep appreciation for all my country has to offer.

After traveling across the continental united states through multiple cross country road trips (you never really realize how big Texas is until you drive through. Damn that state is big!), I wanted to share some of my favorite places in the united states with you. I’ve already talked about my favorite restaurants and lessons learned, so it only seems proper to give you a list of the best places to visit in the USA when you come and travel here!

(Note: This list is based only on where I myself have been. There are a lot much more extremely breathtaking places — like Yosemite or Hawaii — I haven’t explored yet, which is why you don’t see them on this list!)

Memphis

Gritty, industrial, and a bit run down, Memphis appears like its best days are behind it, but don’t let the rough exterior trick you — the city is still home to some killer food and a dynamic blues music scene. Additionally, there’s Graceland (Elvis’s home) for fans of the King, a big waterfront for walking, and the phenomenal, detailed, and moving museum of Civil Rights (it’s huge, so don’t rush it!). I delighted in the city much more than I expected and was disappointed when I had to leave. To use a cliché, it’s a hidden gem!

Austin

My new home (surprise! I moved to Austin!), and every visit here makes me love it much more and more. The warm weather, the lively honky-tonks and live music, funky house bars on Rainey Street, outstanding hiking and biking trails, and tons of outdoor activities… Austin has it all.

Thanks to everything from the growing food truck population to the flagship whole Foods store with the amazing salad bar (grilled pineapple!), I eat — and eat well — nonstop. The Austin campus of the university of Texas offers a youthful vigor to the city, and its liberal attitude attracts a diverse and eclectic population. In short, you can’t skip Austin, because if you do, I’ll find you and drag you there.

New Orleans

New Orleans is a city with soul. It’s seen some hard times, but it lives on with a zest for life unrivaled by many places. It has a rich and long history and is filled with scrumptious French-inspired Creole and Cajun food, live jazz music, street performers, and an appreciation for all the temptations of life. Life is lived well here in the big Easy. You don’t come here to unwind – you come here to indulge! In my opinion, new Orleans one of the most eclectic and dynamic cities in the United States.

Asheville

Asheville is Portland in the North Carolina mountains: full of tasty craft beer, food, and hipsters. I liked the area a lot, including its proximity to some fantastic and beautiful mountain hikes such as the Carolina mountain Trail. Moreover, the town has a lot of parks for those wanting something closer — and be sure to check out the Ashville Botanical gardens near the university campus. The beautiful Smoky Mountains are a short drive away, and the enormous Biltmore estate, the largest privately owned home in the us and once home to George Vanderbilt, is on the outskirts of the city. If you’ve ever seen Downton Abbey, that’s what the house is like! (And, if you haven’t, you should! The show is addicting!)

The Pacific Coastal Drive

The drive up the Pacific coast is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. I have to agree. I didn’t travel the whole coast, but the portion I drove (San Francisco to Portland) was incredible: sheer cliffs, forests descending to the shoreline, miles of beaches, and huge redwoods. It’s jaw-dropping all the way. Be prepared to make slow progress, as you’ll be pulling over frequently to stop, hike, and admire the view. I especially liked Bandon and Coos Bay, Oregon and Mendocino, California.

Redwood national Park

Along the Pacific coast is Redwood national Park, a large expanse of huge redwood trees filled with picnic areas, places to camp, and miles upon miles of hiking trails. trails range from easy to strenuous, and there are numerous loops that head out to nearby beaches. It’s utterly beautiful, awe-inspiring, and humbling in every way. It’s a should for anybody road-tripping around California.

Glacier national Park

Even though I went to when many of the park was still closed (it was too early in the year and there was still snow around), I was still stunned by the area: beautiful snow-topped mountains rising high into the sky; a beautiful, still lake in which to admire those mountains and large glaciers; and hiking trails galore. It was the most mind-blowing place I saw on my trip, and I can understand why everyone raves about it. I can’t recommend a visit there enough.

Denver

The mile-high city (not least because marijuana is legal there), Denver has a mix of outdoor ruggedness and big-city living. It has a huge craft beer scene, outstanding restaurants (including, Sushi Sasa, one of my favorite sushi restaurants in the world), a large international airport with lots of connections, and proximity to the mountains (and the Republic of Boulder). It’s clean, and the locals are extremely friendly. There are few cities in the us I want to live in, but I love Denver enough to say that it’s one of them.

Chicago

When the weather is nice, I don’t think there’s a better city in the United States. set on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago has world-class food (try the deep dish, sushi, and hot dogs), the fun and kitschy Navy Pier, Millennium Park with its well-known bean-shaped statue, a kick-ass aquarium, and renowned architecture (be sure to take an architecture tour).

And once the winter season deep freeze is over, Chicagoans burst out of their homes to delight in the summer weather, so there’s a positive, pleased vibe emanating through the city. Take advantage of it.

Natchez

I was many amazed by this Mississippi city. I didn’t know anything about it, but Natchez was recommended as a place to see historic 19th-century homes, built by isolated plantation owners wanting to get away in the summer and interact and socialize with each other. As cotton became king, the houses became ever larger and much more elaborate.

Now, they are historic monuments, and you can trip them while enjoying a view of the Mississippi River. It’s far off the beaten path — and my favorite discovery from my last road trip.

Savannah

Sitting on Georgia’s coast, Savannah escaped the wrath of the Civil War, allegedly because Sherman thought it was too pretty to be destroyed. With streets lined with Spanish moss–covered trees, large and inviting parks, and a bustling waterfront, Savannah is a fantastic place to experience the slow pace of the Old South. I had went to this city many, numerous years ago, but its beauty, southern comfort food, and tranquility stuck with me over the years.

Grand Canyon

Words can’t accurately describe how amazing the Grand Canyon is. It’s breathtaking in so numerous ways —its sheer size, fantastic depth, red hues, and striking vistas. many people simply stand at the edge of the canyon and look out across it, but its true size and charm are best appreciated with a hike down to the bottom. Make the time to hike down to the Colorado River, hike the less went to trails, spend the night, and hike back up for sunset.

Nashville

A little bit country, a little bit tech, Nashville is one of the fastest-growing cities in the US, and rightly so. It’s got a fantastic music scene (duh), a growing cocktail bar scene, and some down-home southern restaurants.

There’s not a lot of “touristy stuff” to do here, but what makes this city one of my favorites are the music, the food, the wildly friendly and pleased people, and the positive energy the city seems to exude. When you’re here, plan to spend a few hours at the Tennessee state Museum. It goes into great (though in some cases very one-sided) detail about the state’s history, but it’s much more exciting than you might think.

San Francisco

Food of every nature, hipsters, high tech, and a diverse population make San Francisco one of my favorite places to visit. Additionally, it’s close to some fantastic national parks, like Muir Woods, where you can escape the city and go hiking amid huge trees. This city is changing fast (for good or ill) and I’m always looking forward to my next visit. San Francisco has so much to do that you need at least four days to really appreciate it. The city is one of the cultural centers of the united states and not to be missed.

5 Downsides of Living in the Tropics

There’s no doubt about it, living in the tropics is incredible and the island country of Grenada is no exception. The heat, the sand and the sea are all definite perks, but even though there are so numerous pros to living in a warm, humid climate, there are certainly some cons!

1. The Mould & Musty Smell

Because the climate is somewhat damp (for part of the year anyways), items in the home can become mouldy. Sheets and pillows on the bed start giving off a musty smell if not changed frequently enough, and mould starts to creep up the walls in the restroom – even though we’re only having cold showers! the worst part is that our clothes have even become mouldy. We’ve tried hanging them up, and folding them away, but nothing seems to work. It feels like we’re doing laundry just to get musky smell out of our clothes. I even found fungi growing on our laptop covers. We continuously have our windows open to let in the fresh air, but it seems like during the wet season, there’s no stopping it.

2. The creepy Crawlies

If you’re going to live in the tropics, creepy creatures are completely unavoidable! However, I have to admit, Grenada is pretty good when it comes to bugs and creepy crawlies. We don’t see spiders, scorpions or snakes, but we do have enormous centipedes. Being from North America, we’re used to seeing the occasional centipede, which average about an inch in length. The ones we’ve been seeing here can be up to 12 inches long and they eat rodents! Their bite is filled with toxic venom, and although not fatal to humans, it can cause swelling, nausea, chills and fever. In total we’ve seen 6 inside our house, with one being about 10 inches long (I know this because it spanned the diameter of the cooking pot we found it in!) just thinking about these substantial centipedes makes me shiver.

3. The Salt

Having the option of swimming in either the Atlantic ocean or the Caribbean Sea each day is a highlight of living here in Grenada. However, living near salt water wreaks havoc on electronic items. because we work online, you can think of how careful we are with our computers. Nick’s charging cord has completely deteriorated from the salty moisture in the air, plus we’ve gone through a couple of power bar cords, two toasters and two standing fans. We continuously clean our computers to get the salt off and do our best to take care of all the electronics in our house.

4. The risk of Disease

The main issue with living in many tropical countries is the risk of Dengue Fever and Malaria – both of which are mosquito borne illnesses. here in Grenada, dengue fever is present, but malaria is not. There’s no vaccine for dengue, so the best we can do is wear mosquito repellent, sleep under a net and wear long clothes at dawn and dusk.

5. The chance of natural Disasters

Mother Nature can strike anywhere and at anytime. No matter where you go in the tropics, there’s always going to be the chance of a typhoon, earthquake, volcano eruption, tornado, hurricane, monsoon, tsunami or flood. here in Grenada, the hurricane season runs from June to November and although there’s little chance of one happening here, there was a major category 5 hurricane (Ivan) back in 2004. We always check the hurricane and storm websites to stay up to date.

I struggled to come up with these 5 downsides of living in the tropics. and honestly, the chances of disease or natural disaster are small, we’re mostly concerned about the salt ruining our electronics! The upsides of living in a tropical paradise far outweigh these downsides…stay tuned for that list.
